At Dewinton Pet Hospital, we strive to bring you the latest innovative medical procedures. We are proud to offer laser surgery as a progressive option for our clients and their pets undergoing procedures under genera anesthesia.

How does Surgery with a Laser Work?

The term LASER (yes, laser is an acronym) stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation, and is essentially an intense beam of light. When used in an instrument that allows this light to be controlled, the laser energy instantly vaporizes the water found in tissues. This allows the laser to “cut” in the same way as a traditional scalpel blade. Unlike a traditional scalpel blade, the laser energy cauterizes nerve endings and blood vessels as it cuts through the tissue. This results in minimal, if any, blood loss and less pain and discomfort for the patient during recovery.

Benefits of Laser Surgery

In many cases, laser surgery can be beneficial over traditional surgical techniques. Below are some of the benefits of Laser Surgery:

  • Less pain – The laser seals nerve endings as it cuts through tissue.
  • Less bleeding – The laser cauterizes blood vessels as it cuts through tissue, leading to minimal, if any blood loss.
  • Less swelling – As light is the only instrument to come in contact with the tissue, there is less damage to the surrounding tissues.
  • Precision – using a laser allows the veterinary surgeon to only affect or remove the target tissue, leaving healthy tissue unaffected.
  • Reduced risk of infection – The high energy of the laser energy kills bacteria and microorganisms that can potentially cause infection during recovery.
  • Quicker recovery – Your pet is less likely to feel pain and discomfort after surgery, and can return to normal activities sooner.
