Exotic Pets You Can Own Today!

For those looking for a bit more variety in their household, these exotic pets won’t disappoint! It’s estimated that over 20 million Americans own exotic pets, with popularity for these sometime surprising pets growing over recent years. With Alberta having no specific permits for exotic pets, you can check out any of the following at a pet store near you!

1. Tarantula

The site of a big hairy spider may make some of your house guests run for the door, while others will approach with glee. Tarantulas make great pets, with life spans that can reach 10-25 years! They rarely bite humans, despite their large fangs. However, it’s best not to pick up or try to play with a tarantula, as they are actually quite delicate and can easily be harmed. If properly cared for, these gentle giants will provide years of company.

2. Emperor Scorpion

If the big hairy spider isn’t enough shock factor for you, try an Emperor Scorpion. Shiny, black and scary looking claws, these kinds of scorpion are one of the most common types of scorpions selected as pets. Generally docile, these pets can grow up to 8 inches in length, and carry only a mild venom. But they can still pack a sting with their stinger or claws!

3. Sugar Glider

Put down those creepy-crawlers because sugar gliders are here! Originating from such exotic locations as Australia, New Guinea and Indonesia, sugar gliders can live up to 15 years and reach about 7 inches in length. These exotic pets have become popular due to their incredibly social personalities and close bond to their owners. It’s best to keep two sugar gliders, as they will want company when you’re not around.

4. Hedgehog

With lifespans reaching up to eight years, these spikey little cuties can weigh only 1.5 pounds. Their high adorable factor makes them a popular choice as exotic pets, but they can require a lot of maintenance. However, hedgehogs are very quiet, curious and are most active at night. As they have very poor eyesight, these pets must rely heavily on smell and hearing to navigate. One advantage of these exotic pets is that they don’t trigger allergies, and also love to cuddle!

5. Kinkajou

These adorable pets hail from Central and South Africa, and can come with a hefty price tag. They are well worth it though for those looking for an affectionate and loveable exotic pet. Kinkajous can live up to 25 years, and are extremely loving towards their owners. This exotic pet is becoming more popular due to their playful and docile nature. The Kinkajou has been described as having a baby bear face with an otter body.

6. Bearded Dragon

Originating from Australia, bearded dragons are one of the most popular lizards to purchase as pets. Their lifespan is roughly 5-8 years, and are great beginner pets for kids and adults alike. Quiet and calm, bearded dragons grow up to 24 inches in length, and can be found in just about every pet store. With proper care, a bearded dragon can be a fantastic pet that requires little maintenance.

7. Piranha

Piranhas are the ultimate exotic pet for aquarium enthusiasts. Coming from South Africa, these fish can grow quite large in size but are very timid and aggressive. They have a long lifespan, up to 15 years, and require a decent sized tank to be kept in. Piranha’s will eat almost anything and will prefer a varied diet, however most frozen fish food will suffice.
